Having not had an AGM last year, the SGGC committee decided it was important not to miss another year, despite continuing Covid restrictions, so the AGM for 2021 took place by Zoom on 6th April. Forty-two members were present with some apologies from others who were unable to use Zoom.
Chairman Tony Hodgson gave his report, touching briefly on the activities of 2019 and the effect the pandemic has had on us as gardeners. He went on to give a resume of his time and activities as chairman of the Club since its formation, but felt it was time to step down. He was sad to be leaving the position and the Club but wished members well for the future.
The election of officers followed, with Linda Penny being voted in as the new chairman and Aurelle Tomkins and Glynis Drummond continuing as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Those committee members willing to stand again were elected en bloc.
Linda Penny expressed thanks to the retiring chairman for all his work over the last 15 years and was pleased to announce that the committee had awarded him with Honorary Life Membership, a first for the Club. Tony’s wife Penny was then detailed to sprint upstairs to Tony’s study to present him with a gift from Club members of two engraved silver wine bottle coasters (bottles of wine having been delivered earlier!)
She then thanked the second retiring committee member, Joyce Clark. Joyce has been an extremely diligent and efficient membership secretary for 9 years and will be missed, but is remaining a member. Committee member Gwen Ward has offered to take over as membership secretary for which she was thanked.
Two new committee members were elected: Jane Lovett and Ruth Dixon, both very welcome.
The meeting concluded with information on plans for the coming year which, hopefully, will see the resumption of meetings in the Hall and visits to gardens, together with the annual show and CHRISTMAS PARTY!
